For example, when we perform a classic abdominal crunch we first lie on our backs and then attempt to raise our shoulders off the ground. At this point, contraction begins with the upper abdominal muscles and then onwards to the other abs, carrying the ribs towards the pelvis. Alternatively, for a reverse ab crunch we start by lying on our backs once more and then attempting to raise our legs and hips off the floor. We notice a contraction of the lower abdominal muscles at first after which the other abs kick in as well as the pelvis moves towards the ribs.
